(Why younger women should agree to, or encourage, sexual relationships with an older man is not clear: it may be because of a Freudian father-fixation, or because the older man is more experienced, or because older men are fair game and the relationship will bring financial and perhaps social rewards.) As the relationship evolves, it reassures the man that he is still sexually attractive, that he is not becoming impotent, and that someone demonstrably believes him to be important. The new relationship gives him an exciting sexual experience, but this is not the main reason for it. More importantly, the relationship increases the man’s self-esteem. He feels wanted and important.
